IMRT focuses radiation
treatment on the cancer but spares
healthy tissue. In recent years
the
convergence of of new technology has
made it possible to treat cancers while
avoiding surrounding healthy tissue.
This process starts with a CAT scan or
PET/CT scan which allows the physician
to carefully outline the tumor and
surrounding normal tissues.
Radiation treatment is then planned for
each individual case. During
treatment, the radiation beam is
continually modified while the cancer is
being treated to allow three-dimensional
treatment. A special coordinated
laser system is necessary for
reproducibility of daily treatment.
Studies of cancers treated with IMRT
demonstrate improved cure rates.
CCCNF is one of only a few facilities in
Northern Florida to offer dynamic
intensity modulated radiation treatment,
which reduces daily treatment times for
patients, spares normal tissue and
enhances patient compliance and tumor
control rate.
