MammoSite therapy works by
delivering radiation treatment from
inside the breast directly to the tissue
removed surrounding the area where the cancer
was found and therefore is most likely
to recur. MammoSite treatment can
be completed in five days instead of
seven weeks of external beam radiation
treament, making it
faster and more convenient for patients.
The radiation procedure starts with the
diagnosis of breast cancer. The
surgeon removes the cancerous mass (a
lumpectomy) and implants a small
flexible catheter. A small balloon
is inflated within the breast and a
radioactive seed is placed in the
balloon twice a day for five days total.
The radiation treatment component is
delivered on an outpatient basis so no
hospital stay is required.
Radiation treatment is delivered
internally to
the area where it is needed most,
minimizing dose to surrounding healthy
tissue. CCCNF is the only facility
in the region that has a dedicated
high-dose-rate brachytherapy suite
making scheduling easy and treatment
times short. We are the only area
facility to provide MammoSite therapy
and we provide this technology in both
offices.
